Skin Care Product Layering For Maximum Effectiveness

I was working in a Wound and Burn Care specialty in the early 80’s when it was commonly thought that skin care topical products would not be absorbed past the skins barrier, the epidermal layer of tissue. To some degree this is still true today. In those early days products were developed for open wounds, but those designed for intact skin were considered to have primarily marketing, not therapeutic, value. However, with passing time and ongoing research, we now know that although the skin provides a remarkable barrier, there are some ingredients that can permeate it. Well designed skin care products using ingredients of small molecular sizes and precise delivery agents can transport significant beneficial substances to all levels of the skin. This results in both strengthening and rejuvenating the bodies’ largest organ system, and restoring a youthful glow, vigor and vitality to your appearance.

The key to doing this effectively is the formulating chemist’s skill in understanding the skin’s barrier system and the interaction between the skin, the ingredients, and the pathways for penetration into and through the skin. Effective anti-aging skin care regimes require a layering process to approach both the water based portions of the cell and the lipid based cellular membrane. Restorative ingredients are often best received by the body in a water based products such as a serum or hydrogel. The body is in its reparative mode when you sleep so it is particularly important to use restorative serums as part of your evening skin care rituals, although they can generally be used also during the day.

Moisturization from a separate product, should be layered on top of the serum, as it benefits the lipid membranes of tissue. A final layer during the day should be a barrier product providing protection from the sun’s UVA rays (the rays that cause UVAging damage) and UVB rays (the rays that cause UVBurns, sun burns). Dr. Perricone in his book The Perricone Promise states

“in essence, a wrinkle can be considered a wound”

and when we approach skin care thoughtfully using pro-dermal synchronization, as Pursue has, to minimize the wrinkle wound, the use of cutting edge high performance products can begin to accelerate the skins own repair mechanisms and significantly restore our appearance.
